Acceptance and Understanding of All

In the school's effort to promote acceptance, understanding, and interaction of ALL students, there is an ongoing effort to educate students as to understanding the needs of ALL students - specifically students with disabilities, students of different races, religions, cultures, and genders.  Additionally, Garfield is focused on the utilization of 2nd Step in all classrooms as their schoolwide Character Education Program integrated into the classrooms.  Garfield also has a Student Discipline Action Plan and monitors the effectiveness of the plan making changes as necessary based on referrals regarding students with disabilities, students of different races, cultures, and gender.

Native American History Month

Room 57 made Dream Catchers during Native American History Month.  The dream catcher is one of the most enduring and widespread symbols associated with Native American culture.  It's commonly believed that the iconic hoop-and-web form is meant to protect sleepers from bad dreams by "catching" them, while letting the good dreams pass through, hence the name.  Source - Google

2022-2023 World Down Syndrome Day

In honor of kids who have Down Syndrome we recognize World Down Syndrome Day at Garfield each year.  World Down Syndrome Day is officially observed on 3/21 to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome.  This year students in grades 1-6 ran for 3 minutes and 21 seconds to support the National Down Syndrome Society Run.

Dia de los Muertos

In November students in Room 13 learned about Dia de los Muertos through literature and art.
