Acceptance and Understanding of All

In the school's effort to promote acceptance, understanding, and interaction of ALL students, there is an ongoing effort to educate students as to understanding the needs of ALL students - specifically students wtih disabilities, students of different races, relgions, cultures, and genders.  Additionally, Garfield is focused on the utilization of 2nd Step in all classrooms as their schoolwide Character Education Program integrated into the classrooms.  Garfield also has a Student Discipline Action Plan and monitors the effectiveness of the plan making changes as necessary based on referrals regarding students with disablities, students of different races, cultures, and gender.

Cultural Awareness Week

During Cultural Awareness Week parents and guardians volunteer to lead multicultural games from around the world as well as crafts during morning recess.  If you would like to volunteer for this please email Mrs. Twet or Mrs. Lucckesi.

Chinese New Year

Garfield students celebrated the Chinese New Year with an assembly.  Students learned about the "Year of the Pig" and enjoyed dance performances by Buchanan High School students.

Multicultural Fashion Show

During Garfield's annual Multicultural Fashion Show students share the customs and symbolism associated with traditional clothing from their heritage.

Second Step

The Second Step Program promotes school connectedness, a respectful school climate, and school success by directly teaching empathy, self-regulation, social-emotional competencies, and problem solving.

Jabali Afrika Assembly

Garfield hosted a Jabali Afrika assembly from Kenya.  Jabali is Kiswahili (Kenya's national language) for "Rock."  Our Cubs got to listen to, learn about, and create music that was a fusion of African rhythms.  Staff and students also learned a traditional African dance.
